What is Samhain?
Samhain pronounced “Saa-win” is the final harvest festival of the Celtic seasonal festivals celebrated on or near October 31st. It marks the end of the Celtic calendar much like New Year’s Eve. It also marks the transition into the darker half of the year, the cold winter months and shorter days ahead. It is believed to be a time when the boundary between our physical world and the spiritual realm - Otherworld - becomes thinner and more permeable than at other times of the year. It is traditionally celebrated with bonfires, feasting, and rituals focused on protection from the forces of winter, divination, and ancestral veneration.

Ritual and Dumb Supper
This ritual will be focused on intentions of grief and loss and will include a dumb supper - a meal held in silence to allow space for those we have lost to speak to us and be remembered. There will be an altar for the honored dead where you can write names and short notes on cards, display photos or personal items, and light a candle for those who are no longer with us (this can be people, pets, whatever you are grieving!). The dumb supper will be potluck, so please bring food to share if you are able. Foods that your loved ones preferred makes a powerful offering for a dumb supper meal.
Important Note
We all walk the path in our own individual ways; let us gather in peace and acceptance of one another’s beliefs, traditions and gnosis. Leave outside stress, rivalries and conflicts at home; politics, hate speech, and inflammatory speech of any kind will not be tolerated. Do not bring alcohol or weapons of any kind (staves are okay but leave your blades at home). Please help us co-create a safe, welcoming environment for all who attend.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can attend?
Honestly, anyone can attend a ritual and dumb supper. You don’t have to claim the title of witch or even consider yourself a pagan in anyway to join us - we all experience grief and loss regardless of our spiritual preferences. This event isn’t recommended for young children because sitting in calm silence for 5 minutes can be tough for younger folks and can be disruptive to the experience of others. We will be offering youth-friendly experiences earlier in the evening. Use your discernment and reach out to us if you have any questions.
What do I bring?
As always, the most important thing to bring is yourself, with an open mind and open heart. You may also bring a potluck dish for the dumb supper, and any ‘tokens of grief’ you wish to bring such as a photo, a piece of jewelry or item of clothing that connects you to those you have lost and wish to connect with.
What do I wear?
You are welcome to wear anything from jeans and a t-shirt to elaborate ritual robes! If you like getting dressed up for these types of events, this is your official invitation to do so - but again, completely optional - wear what you feel comfortable in.
